3.The History

Irwan Tirta becoming very close with Batik when he studied in USA at 1960 because his friends often ask him about the culture of Indonesia, especially in the small city where’s he was born,Blora. They look likes very interest with Batik.
Then, he get a chance to studies the culture of Surakarta Royal Palace helped by John D Rockefeller III and it make him more familiar with Batik it self. From this experience he start his business, not only on Batik cloth but also the others, likes earthenware in Dharmawangsa Hotel, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, use Modang design.
Irwan Tirta always documented old batik design from Mangkunegaran Palace use digital data and papper helped by Rachmat Gobel, the owners of Panasonic.

The Story: Rivera founded Spectrum Communications in 1984 in Corona, California when he was only 21. The business has grown from two employees to more than 150 today. Spectrum has received the Inc 500 Fastest Growing Companies in America Award each year for six consecutive years. The company also has won Hispanic Magazine’s 2000 Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and is a three-time recipient of the Fastest Growing Hispanic Company in America Award. In 1999 and 2000, Rivera was named first-runner up for the Ernst & Young Inland Empire Entrepreneur of the Year Award and was nominated by Business Press for its Innovator of the Year Award in 2001.
Rivera founded Spectrum Communications with only $1,500. Spectrum quickly found a niche providing high-tech services, including communications technology, consulting, and computer sales, in the California area. Spectrum’s customers include the Air Quality Management District, the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Coldwell Bank, Carl’s Jr. Restaurants, as well as many school districts in California. Rivera later founded MeshworX Inc. in 1999 to provide educational software to the state’s K-12 schools. Recognizing the importance of speed and efficiency of communication technology in the business world, Spectrum Communications provides clients with the technology they need to stay ahead of competition. Spectrum specializes in infrastructure, equipment, wiring, and connection of data communications systems.
Rivera believes it’s important for businesses to be involved in all aspects of the communities in which they operate. Both Spectrum Communications and MeshworX support a number of California social service organizations, including Olive Crest Homes & Services for Abused Children, the Settlement House, Alternatives to Domestic Violence, and the Salvation Army Circle of Hope Shelter and Kitchen. The Story: Mark Cuban, who grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and was an entrepreneur from the start. He began with several small businesses that he launched as a teen, and then put himself through Indiana University by doing everything from providing disco lessons to starting a chain letter. He always seemed to be selling what people wanted. Soon after college, Cuban started his own computer consulting firm, MicroSolutions. By 1990, after seven years of nonstop work, the company was grossing $30 million a year. It was then sold to Compuserve. Cuban retired, but not for long.
In 1995, he and partner Todd Wagner co-founded Broadcast.com, an Internet service that provided streaming audio and video of live news, radio, television and sporting events. Broadcast.com then gained notoriety when it showcased events such as President Clinton’s Grand Jury testimony and a Victoria’s Secret fashion show. In launching Broadcast.com, Cuban hired a group of industrious and inventive employees, offering stock options in lieu of big paychecks. The gamble paid off when Broadcast.com went public, and was then purchased by Yahoo in 1999, making Cuban one of the wealthiest people in the country.
In September 2001, Mark Cuban and co-founder Philip Garvin launched HDNet, the world’s first national television network broadcasting all of its programming in spectacular 1080i high-definition television (HDTV). Fueled by Cuban’s business leadership and enthusiasm, HDNet has quickly emerged as the leading provider of quality HDTV news, entertainment and sports programming.

Description of Business: The Three Guineas Fund, a non-profit grant-making foundation, was founded “to promote social justice by expanding access to economic opportunity for women and girls.” The Three Guineas Fund, based in San Francisco, aims to create access to opportunity for women and girls in education and the economy. It emphasizes the roles of women in the business world, collaboration between senior and junior employees, networking amongst businesses, and the importance of philanthropic behavior in today’s business world.
The Story: Muther received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, her M.A. in Anthropology from Cambridge University, England and her M.B.A. from Stanford University. Prior to founding the Three Guineas Fund and the Women’s Technology Cluster, Muther worked as Senior Marketing Officer with Cisco Systems (1989-1994). At Cisco during that time, she helped grow the company from $25 million to $1 billion in sales. Previously, Muther was vice president of corporate marketing at 3Com and a vice president of marketing at Bridge Communications. She has won numerous awards and honors, including Top 25 Women on the Web, Fortune’s Top Women in Technology 2001, the Supporter of Entrepreneurship Award at the 2001 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, and was an invited speaker at the White House First Conference on Philanthropy in 2001.
When she decided to leave Cisco, Muther’s goal was to take what she learned about entrepreneurship into the world of philanthropy with a eye toward specifically helping women succeed in business and in leadership roles. She invested $2 million of her own wealth to launch the Three Guineas Fund (and continues to use her business knowledge and networks to help nascent women entrepreneurs). The name Three Guineas Fund comes from Virginia Woolf’s meditation on philanthropy entitled “Three Guineas.” One of the Fund’s main projects is the Women’s Technology Cluster (WTC). Founded in 1999, the WTC is a non-profit incubator in San Francisco that assists women in obtaining capital to build communications technology businesses. Muther’s vision with the WTC is to facilitate the development of independent businesses using a revolutionary technique – collaboration, via networking, among businesses employees within a firm.
Her business philosophy is teamwork. Employees with more experience, for example, mentor those with less – a system that enables more experienced workers to gain new ideas and insight from the younger employees. For Muther, this helps foster a strong working relationship that leads to greater business success. Recognizing the interrelations of the business world and the underutilization of women within it, Muther has developed a visionary method that incorporates women into more prominent roles in the business community.
Muther does not see business prosperity as the bottom line. The well being of the society in which we live is equally important, she says. Muther’s companies have made a commitment to contribute a two percent equity stake back into the Women’s Technology Cluster to be used for philanthropic purposes. The idea is to create a reciprocal relationship between the business world and society.
The Women’s Technology Cluster companies are creating jobs and fast-growing companies through aggressive acquisition of equity capital. WTC firms already have raised $61 million in private equity in the first sixteen months of the incubator’s operation. The Women’s Technology Cluster is still working to fulfill the ideals upon which it was founded. Launched in 1999, the WTC has thrived in the business world and has been recognized for its accomplishments. WTC firms continue to receive abundant capital and investor interest from overseas investors.

Description of Business: Black Entertainment Television is a 24-hour programming service targeting African-American consumers. It is one of the leading black-owned and operated entertainment companies in the world.
The Story: Robert Johnson was born in Hickory, Mississippi in 1946. He was the ninth of ten children born to Archie and Edna Johnson. Searching for a better life, the Johnsons moved to Freeport, Illinois. Robert attended the University of Illinois where he met his wife Sheila Crump. He graduated from the university in 1968 and then earned a Master’s degree in public administration from Princeton University. Robert then moved to Washington D.C. where he launched his career in television.
Since Johnson’s Princeton days, he knew the power of television could help promote black businesses and culture. With his interest in broadcasting growing, Johnson landed a job as a lobbyist for the National Cable Television Association (NCTA). In 1978, he began developing his innovative plan to produce television programs targeted to black viewers. To help launch this effort, Tom Wheeler, president of the NCTA, gave Johnson $15,000 as an initial investment. Johnson later convinced John Malone, the president of Tele-Communications, Inc., to invest $500,000 in the project. In what proved to be a fortunate break, Johnson met with Bob Rosencrans, the president of UA-Columbia Cablevision, at an NCTA annual convention. Eager to help make Johnson’s dream a reality, Rosencrans said he owned slots on a cable TV satellite that Johnson could use for his new channel. With all of the parts in place to begin, Johnson named his nascent business venture, Black Entertainment Television (BET). At 11 p.m., on January 8, 1980, BET officially aired its maiden program and eventually became the first and largest black-owned broadcasting company on cable television.
Robert Johnson has created jobs for hundreds of African Americans who otherwise might not be employed in television or related industries. Johnson developed a television network and business venture that would be a role model for African Americans in America and around the world. As it stands, BET’s current slate of variety shows and dramas are providing more opportunities for black writers, directors, producers and artists.
BET continues to expand its corporate reach, and is now involved in publishing, retail clothing, restaurants, hotels, casinos, financial services and computer content development. BET also recently launched its own website.
Over the years, Johnson and his wife Sheila have given generously to nonprofit organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, Howard University, and the Levine School of Music. The Johnsons also hold many charity events year round to help improve communities across the country.
